Oh my a butterfly! Part 3 The Release

Nicholas, butterfly in hand.

Here we are, ready to let our Painted Ladies go.

(Click here for Part 1 or Part 2, if you missed either.)

Here they are, ready to go.
The kids were excited albeit a little apprehensive about holding the butterflies. That would be everyone except Nick who as you know is an expert entomologist. He showed them how it's done. We repeated the mantra "they don't hurt, they just tickle." And once they saw Nick, everyone was eager for their turn.
Can I have a turn???
Andrew was up next, he was concentrating so hard...
Awe
Andrew tries to offer the butterfly to Megan, but it doesn't want to leave its perch on Andrew's arm.
He tries placing it on the tree instead.
Megan's go.
She's thrilled!
Nick contemplates the last one, before letting it go.

High fives from daddy/ Mr. Wif. We did it! So fun!
And the treats: banana whoopie pies with strawberry filling. They were seriously good.
Now, for some reason that morning, I told Nick I was making butterfly treats for the BUTTERFLY party, and he announces he wants a spider. A spider? I try reasoning "it a butterfly party." This has no impact at all. How am I going to make a whoopie into a spider? Then I remember picking up these cupcake holders after Halloween last year. Nick is giddy.
And this would be Nick stuffing in the last morsel.

Group Hug!

I would HIGHLY recommend doing this with your child (or just for you). The cost is reasonable (Butterfly Garden $19.99 and voucher for caterpillars $5) and there is very little work that actually has to be done when the caterpillars are in their cup (keep them out of direct sunlight, don't jostle them, when they are chrysalides move them into their mesh home, and when the butterflies emerge give them sugar water or orange slices to eat).

If you have any questions, email me. It was seriously fun.

Here is a link to Insect Lore's website where you can purchase a kit.

And, to my friends in the UK, you can get the kits here too (Kendra, do it!!!) It's available on Amazon UK/ Insect Lore (this link should work, if not go to Google).
