Fourth for Four Year Olds

This year, I actually managed to convince my husband to stay in the United States for the 4th of July.  I thought Nicholas would be old enough to join in on some of the festivities.  The fireworks generally start at about 9:30pm which is way too late, and he is still very young and would probably get very scared at an actual show, but I wanted to introduce him to some of the holiday's activities because they are quite fun.

We were supposed to have a little fishing expedition on one of our lakes with two of Nick's classmates but it got cancelled because one of the children got sick.  Nick was so disappointed, but we rounded up Nonni and Poppy and headed to the lake to give fishing a shot anyway.

It was hot, around 90 I'd say.  We didn't have proper bait, so we used bread which the fish loved, but our hook was too big so we had trouble hooking a small sunfish.  Read below to see what we did catch.

Poppy explains the basics.

Nicholas gives it a go.
He really wants to do it all by himself.

It doesn't take too long to hook something.  Nicholas is reeling it in, but uh oh, it's not a fish

It's a turtle!
(you can just barely make it out)

Poppy unhooks the poor guy

Nick is not amused that he did not catch a fish.  It is hot.  Sweltering.  And a heat and hunger induced meltdown ensues.  It isn't pretty.

After we eat, cool down indoors, and rally substantially, my sister comes over with her daughter, and shortly thereafter we have a little fireworks show for the preschool set at about 5:30- lol.

Rhys and Auntie hanging out before we begin the fireworks.

*Muah*

First, we break out the sparklers.  Nonni lights one and shows them how to hold it away from themselves. It went a little something like this.
Uh guys...we're not so sure about this.

Maya: Gasp!
Nick: Come on, Maya!

Nick: What makes it do that?
Fire, son.

More time elapses and with a little coaxing Maya decides she wants to give it a go.

There, it's not so bad.

Nick, following his cousin, wants to try.

And gets comfortable enough to be silly.

Yeah, man.  High five.  That was awesome!
Poppy was very excited to show the kids actual fireworks.  They looked something like this, but went a little higher than the photo would have you believe.  Overall, they made a spraying sort of noise, punctuated by loud bursts of popping.

In awe, and a little scared.

Mommy, stay back.  Be careful.

Whoa, check it!

Yeah, that was pretty amazing.

Little brother, what did you think?
Meh.  It was aiight.

Can we do more sparklers, pleeease!?

Grand Finale

Happy Fourth of July!
